Being in poverty versus being poverty conscious
2008-11-06 18:32:57

While Lani’s at Fratello’s in Manchester, co-presenting a LinkedIn program for the NH High Tech Council, I’m holding down the fort and just got off our twice monthly group call for Melanie Benson Strick’s Fast Tack to 6&7 Figure Lifestyle Business. Coupla big takeaways:

  1. Because of everything going on economy-wise, we had a roundtable discussion about how to handle our own fears, as well as the fears of our current and prospective clients, and about staying positive and focused in the face of all the “doom and gloom” talk around us.
  2. At the group’s request, Melanie also helped by delineating a difference between people in poverty versus people who are “Poverty Conscious.” I’ll be paraphrasing here, but people who are poverty conscious literally cannot see, believe, or be convinced that things are gong to get better -for them, for the economy, for anyone. People who are in poverty but not “Poverty Conscious” (these, then, would be the “Prosperity Conscious” folks) will say, believe, and be convinced of things that sound Pollyanna-ish to the Poverty Conscious, like: “I’m a millionaire - my bank account just hasn’t caught up with me yet.”
  3. Even if you think that sounds Pollyanna-ish (heck, it does to me, if I’m gonna be completely honest), let me ask you this: Who’s more likely to actually make a buck or two and make it out of a poverty situation? My money’s on the Prosperity Conscious person 99.44% of the time.

So put on some rose-colored glasses, will ya? It’s the only logical thing to do.

Happy New Year! I don’t know how you’re spending the second day of 2009, but so far, Allen and I have made whole-grain apple pancakes, played with race tracks, hit a spin class, picked up one of our son’s friends for a play date, and experimented with a cool web-based video creation tool called Animoto. There are a [...]
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about what Fantasy Football is teaching me about business. The set-up was that I started the year 2-4, in 9th place, and was ready to write-off the season until my bro-in-law reminded me that in his championship season, he’d started 1-4-1 and in dead last. With the [...]
Just a friendly reminder to get on the Twitter train sooner rather than later, if you haven’t done so already. If you’ve been resisting it, or you’re annoyed because you think it’s just another time-sucking nuisance, or you’re stuck in “I just don’t get it” humbug, it’s OK. Yes, Twitter can be a powerful tool for your [...]
Have you ever paid to sleep? It sounds ridiculous, I admit. But last week, Allen and I made the bold decision that $12 was a bargain for one hour and 45 minutes of mid-day shut-eye. We had been pulling weird hours already, trying to fit in a chunk of time before our 6 year old went off [...]
