On the streets of Bhindi Bazaar, there waddle, to the best of my knowledge, only two ducks.

Below is a brief interview with their owner:

ME: When will you eat the ducks?

SUFFIAN R.: Never. They are my pets.

ME: Oh. Do they have names?

SUFFIAN R.: No. Yes. They are ‘Duck’ and ‘Duck’.

Yes, ‘Duck’ and ‘Duck’ walk freely in Bombay. And unlike most other domesticated animals in this neighborhood, they will not die by the hand of man.

Though uncaged, they do not run away, and there have been no attempted thefts.

SIDENOTE: Many people sleep in the streets in Bindi Bazaar. To outsiders, the neighborhood often seems like the kind of place where one’s things might be frequently stolen, but for people who live here leaving fowl lying around is pretty safe.

If anyone tried to snatch a bird, it would make noise, and wake many witnesses.

A couple months ago a reporter with a major national news organization called to ask what I thought about the fact so little had been spent on Spanish-language TV advertising in the months before the presidential primaries, given how much growth we had seen in recent cycles. He or she reminded me of a press release I distributed years ago that screamed record spending. My reaction was that it was way too early to assume a decline and that the story is probably best written after the primaries were held in states with huge Hispanic populations.

Well we're nearing that point. I was excited to see Ira Teinowitz's (of Advertising Age) scoop on this subject. His story, out tonight, reports:

"Hispanic Spending in Texas to Surpass $2 Million"

AND

"Together, the candidates spent nearly $2 million advertising to Spanish-speaking Hispanics in California, and broadcasters are saying spending ahead of the March 4 Texas primary could top that."

AND

"TNSI Campaign Media Analysis Group reports that before Texas, a total of $2.6 million had been spent on Hispanic media. Texas already has seen $400,000 and the broadcasters said total spending is fast moving up."

Wow. It's nice to have access to these data.

I'll have to look back at my records before I can say for certain, but gosh this seems huge. Is it evidence of record spending in the Democratic primaries yet? Hmmm, perhaps.

Regardless, this seems to predict it will reach record levels by the time the Texas primary is held during the first week of March (on the 4th).

A side topic is the campaigns' choices of media consultants. Teinowitz points out the Obama campaign chose a Texas-based consultant, perhaps providing unique state-specific insights.

A long time ago, a bunch of Jewish folk in Southern India got together and formed…

Yes, that’s the name of the town, at least now.

It’s a nice little place, which, according to this 1893 account by an English-speaking traveler, runs “about 1/3rd of a mile in length, and is situated close to the banks of the backwater, commencing from the southern wall of the Rajah’s Palace, and terminating at a stream which divides it from the Arab and Moplah sailors.”

Now, when I showed this photo to some friends on flickr, one said:

hmmm, is it wrong that I find that amusing?!
Somehow compared to say, ‘China Town’, Jew Town just sounds wrong, sounds rather un-PC.

True.

And now, A QUICK THEORY:
I think it’s because ‘Jew’, unlike many other religious/ethnic group titles, is now commonly used as a noun for people but NOT used as an adjective (since we have ‘Jewish’).

For example:
He is a Christian. = Ok.
That is a Christian house. = Also okay.

BUT:
He is a Jew. = Ok.
That is a Jew house. = Sounds odd. (Borat, of course, got miles out of this awkward phrasing.)

So ‘Jewtown’ sounds strange, whereas ‘Christiantown’ or ‘Muslimtown’ would be only a touch unusual.

In general:
ethnic adjective+‘town’= Ok.

Chinesetown=A touch unusual, but ok.

Big-place-name +‘town’ is also ok.

For example:

Chinatown=Ok, of course.
Israeltown= Might sound a little theme park-ish, but otherwise fine.

But noun-for-a-group-of-people+‘town’ is not so hot.

Chinesepeopletown or Chinesepersontown or (to state the obvious) Chinamantown= Not so much.

I might be off here. Can anyone think of any exceptions?
