Reported security breaches, which have compromised personal information about individuals, reached the 100 million records mark on December 12, after disclosures that hackers had gained access to a database at UCLA and the theft of a Boeing laptop. The UCLA database contained personal information on approximately 800,000 present and former students, parents, faculty and staff. The laptop, stolen from a Boeing employee’s car, contained personal information on 382,000 current and former employees. The Privacy Rights Clearing House has maintained a Chronology of these breaches, which now shows records on over 100 million persons exposed, starting with the ChoicePoint data breach in February, 2005. Natural Resource Damage (NRD) represents a significant environmental liability concern to all parties involved in the generation, transportation, and disposal of oil or hazardous substances. Energy, mining, transportation, manufacturing and disposal companies increasingly find themselves concerned with liabilities for restoration of the environment to "background" or "but for the release" conditions.
