I'll be going to the Guthrie on Wednesday Night for a play, Everyone offer their two cents on where to go downtown. I'm open to price range an culinary flavor. Didn't find anything in the memories for Downtown Minneapolis, just st. paul. Vegetarians speak up, I am one so I need your thoughts as well.

Last summer, my dog did a number on my patio's screen door. I'm hoping to repair it before it starts to get buggy. I've called both Menard's and Home Depot and neither one of those places will repair it for you (they just have the materials to do-it-yourself). Anyone have any suggestions on places to take it to get it repaired? I just don't have the time (or the motivation) to do it myself.

Bonus points if the place is in the North Metro. Thanks for any and all help!

If anyone is interested in researching your Swedish ancestry (6 of my wife's great-great grandparents were Swedish, so I've already delved into this quite a bit), there will be 3 local introductory sessions on the subject in Minneapolis & Cambridge next week:

Minneapolis, May 2, at the American Swedish Institute, 2600 Park Ave. S., registration at the door starting at 8:30 a.m.

Cambridge, May 3, afternoon & evening sessions

The website with more information is:  http://www.dis.se/swedgentour/

Unlike other nationalities where I've also done genealogical research (e.g. Norway, England, Australia), a substantial part of Swedish family history data is available only in microfilms of parish records in Swedish.  This should be a very helpful introduction for anyone interested.

Hey all,

I'm a junior (soon to be senior!) at Macalester, and I'm desperately seeking a place to work this summer. I've done a little bit of temping work in the past, and I was wondering if you could tell me about the agencies in the area, and if you have any recommendations. (Or "stay the fuck away from there's.")

Will they care that I don't have a car/don't drive?

Otherwise, if you have any kick ass places that you would suggest looking into for summer jobs, please let me know. I'm getting desperate at this point. Thanks!

Hey, if you have, or know anyone that has a male ferret they can no longer provide for, please let me know. I have an old ferret and a young ferret, and I want to make sure he has someone that can keep up with him and be with him after bear dies.

Does anyone know a place where I could rent a wheelchair for a day? I know they have them at malls and other places, but I need one that I can take whereever I want.

My grandmother is a big Twins fan but hasn't been to a game for years. She can walk, but the walking involved for attending a game at the dome would be way too much for her. My plan is to drive us to a light rail stop, park and wheel her onto the train, ride the train downtown, wheel her into the dome for the game, and back on the train to car.

Any ideas?

This Thursday, April 26th, we are invited to Dine Out and Do Good.
Many restaurants in the metro are teamed up with The Aliveness Project, a community center for people living with HIV/AIDS, and donate a percentage of their sales that day to this organization.

The restaurants are in different categories of how much they donate. Last year, I ate at Koyi because they are in the highest percentage bracket: 35% or more.

Check out diningoutforlife.com or call 612-824-LIFE for a list of which restaurants participate, and how much they donate.

In my opinion, this is the easiest, tastiest way to give to a good cause.

Hey Everyone,

So, they are currently selling our duplex and conducting showings at our house, which I know is to be expected but they have started letting us know less than 24 hours in advance and scheduling up to 5 times a week all on different days and sometimes having two or three in a day. Saturday mornings have been especially popular. This wouldn't bother me so much but this has been going on for 4 or 5 months. It's becoming a total invasion of our privacy. I know that in our lease we signed that we are authorized to allow them to have showings but I was wondering if anyone knew of any tenants' rights that might be being violated or if anyone has dealt with a similar situation.

They also said that we need to keep the apartment cleaner and that we shouldn't have dirty dishes in the sink because if could be considered a sanitary violation!!! I am so tired of having to make my schedule around the whims of the realtor and our building manager who declared he would come over friday afternoon to help us pick up! This is property we are paying an exorbitant rent for.

It sounds like our hands might be tied, but was just hoping that someone might have some resources or suggestions.

You can take this down if it's not twin cities enough or something...

Edit! You all have been so amazing and helpful, not to mention hilarious. So I talked to the realtor and he is actually being much more reasonable than the actual property managers. However, due to your wonderful encouragement, we are going to start threatening legal action if they continue to have showings without our permission within less than 24 hours. Thaaaaaank you! Also, if worse comes to worse the inflatable sheep and an arsenal of sex toys will be on full display in every room in the house.

You might not be able to make it to the MS Walk on May 6th (thanks for the reminder, pen_grunt!), but there are still plenty of opportunities to have fun outdoors this summer while benefitting a cause. Most of these are bicycle tours, the last one is a motorcycle tour. I'm volunteering for all of these events as a route safety team member, and would love to see you there!

May 6th is the date for the National MS walk in the Twin Cities. Get exercise, see some great city scenery and support a great cause. . .

Though there are walks all over the state, the two main sites are Minneapolis (Starting and Boom Island and walking to Minnehaha Park--8 miles) and Saint Paul (Starting at the state capital and joining the Minneapolis crew at Minnehaha Park--9 miles). The walking trails are simply beautiful, and the National MS Society does a great job of providing rest stops, breaks, food, water and bathrooms along the trail. It really does seem like a short, pleasant walk--and it's in support of a great cause. Bring the kids (we had a few kids and toddlers in strollers on our team last year), and even a pet or two (we have a dog signed up for our team).

Looking for a team to join? We're fun, friendly folks:
http://www.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=4481&team_id=5911

Just want to donate? Click on the link to my donation site:
http://www.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR?px=1897926&pg=personal&fr_id=4481

Don't want to do either one? Come on down anyway. There's a suggested donation to participate in the walk (to cover all the food and such) but it's a great weekend activity.

Edited to add...here's where to find more information on the event itself: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=WLK_MNM_homepage

Anyone know of a reliable source of free WiFi in the Twin Cities area? Meaning, I want to go to a coffee shop that advertises this "free WiFi" service that actually pulls through. No places that have spotty service or are always having technical difficulties. Any thoughts?

I'm interested in renting something fun to drive around for a day this summer. Preferably a Jeep Wrangler [my husband has a thing for it, and it'd be a fun surprise to pick him up in one].

I've checked out places like Avis, hertz, budget, enterprise, etc... online. Some places have the option of renting H2/3s, mustang convertibles, etc.. [Hertz was best for that, btw]. I also looked up other local limo/rental businesses but that is very expensive and not quite what I'm looking for [mostly classic cars].

Anyone know of a place where I'm not looking?

I'm also open to going places that are out of town too. We wouldn't have to be in the cities to have fun with it.

Free to even a mediocre home! Big-ass white flag pole. Metal. Some minor rust - could easily be sanded and sprayed with a fresh coat of Rustoleum. It's pretty tall - nearly as tall as my two story house. Eagle on top. It's laying in my front yard, just waiting for someone to come take it away. E-mail me at annablume at gmail dot com for the address.

Hi Everyone!

Last year I started taking a Continuing Studies class at MCAD but then some obligations came up and I had to drop it.  The school refunded me in the form of a $318 gift certificate (the standard cost for a non-credit class).  I don't see myself having time to use it in the forseeable future so I thought I'd see if anyone would be interested in buying it off of me.

It never expires.

Registration for the summer session begins May 1st!

Have a wonderful Saturday!!!

I have fallen in love with the British comedy My Hero that plays some week nights on public TV. I was able to get the first season from Blockbuster online, but want to see the rest of the show. So does anyone know if there are any video stores that has the rest of the show for rent? At this moment, this quest seems vitally important and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm interested in taking some cooking classes. Most of the classes I've been able to find are your standard 2-hour demonstration classes where you don't actually get to cook anything, you just get to watch someone else cook and talk about it. The 2-hour participation classes seem slightly better, but not by much.

I'd like a class that is hands-on and goes for multiple sessions, where I really feel like I'm learning about and experiencing cooking. So far, cooking schools are too involved for me, and standard cooking classes aren't involved enough.

Can anyone recommend a class that is closer to what I'm looking for? Thanks!

Of the current overpopulation of Minnesota jails and prisons? It could be because they're holding debtors there, non-violent, struggling people that cannot pay their fines for one valid reason or another.

Violent criminals are being released due to the overpopulation, and harmless debtors are locked away, with no hope of paying these debts while in custody. Is this the way we want our justice system to work?

Call your legislators today.
