Hi, in case anyone is interested, we are holding a workshop at our store, Sunny Day Earth Solutions at 26th and Como. It's entitled "Is Solar for Me?" and the class is mostly a seminar on the reality of solar usage. For example, the cost of all the materials, what your house will look like, the feasibility of the entire project. After, it will be more a Q&A where Ramy Selim, the owner/certified assessor will be able to answer most, if not all of your questions. It costs $20, starts at 3pm and is expected to run anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.
Also
In case anyone is interested, we will also be featured on KFAI radio Sunday, March 2nd from 6 to 7pm. "Reduce Your Carbon Footprint" will also be able to be streamed for up to two weeks after the show on www.kfai.org - click on The Wave Project, past shows, then find our and click "stream". Thanks.

Does such a place exist where one might get a debt consolidation loan without collateral? I own a crappy car (worth around $500, I would guess) and I rent. There aren't many items that I might use as collateral other than my soul, and most banks don't accept souls.
I am able to make all of my monthly minimum payments and am current on everything, but I'm not making any real progress on the debt at current interest rates. Wells Fargo won't do the loan due to "high balances on revolving accounts" which is the reason in the first place that I need the loan!
Bonus points for a place that will loan me an extra bit on top of the debt to purchase a less shitty vehicle which might be used as collateral for the loan. :)

The University of Minnesota Law School's Theatre of the Relatively Talentless (T.O.R.T.) presents the Sixth Annual Law School Musical:
March 7 & 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Pantages Theatre, Downtown Minneapolis
Robin Hood, Esq. tells the story of the hero's triumphant return from studying abroad. With the help of his new LL.M. friend and other characters he meets in the Sherwood Rare Books Room, he attempts to save the law school and the fair Marian from the evil clutches of Interim Dean John.
The Law School Musical is an original, full-length parody written, directed, and performed by University of Minnesota Law Students. Each year more than 70 Law School students shed their normally deadly serious demeanor to showcase hidden talents of wit, song, and dance.
Tradition dictates that each production features cameo appearances by faculty and prominent members of the legal community. Past participants include Former Vice President Walter Mondale, Former Attorney General Mike Hatch, Federal District Chief Judge James Rosenbaum and Senator Amy Klobuchar.
Robin Hood, Esq. is for lawyers and non-lawyers alike, but not generally suitable for small children, so parental guidance is advised.
Tickets are $10/students, $15/general public. For more information or to purchase tickets, please see our website.
See you at the show!

Hello fellow twincitizens,
I'm looking for a freestanding chalkboard, preferably reversible -- you know, the old-school style ones on wheels we used to have in classrooms and college classrooms in the good ol' days. If anyone has any ideas where I could find one, let me know.
I'm aiming to find one that is at least three to four feet wide.
Thanks muchly!

So I've got a question, is anyone out there a Hamline University student? I am a resident of Wisconsin (about an hour away from the cities) and am currently going to school at Youngstown State University. Yeah, long and complex story, if you're really interested, read my journal but I'm not going to talk about it on here. What I'm wondering for all of you Hamline students is if they really like it there. I'm currently an English Education major but I noticed that there's no English Education major but that there is a education minor so my other question is that if you want to teach English or any other subject do you just major in that one area and take a minor in education? Thanks a bundle!

I am in the process of planning a bachelor party, and although I have done quite a bit of searching on Google, I have not come up with exactly the information that I need. So here are my questions, keeping in mind that I'd like to focus on Minneapolis itself, but if there are really great places in Saint Paul or nearby suburbs, let me know.
1. What strip clubs do you recommend, and why? The party happens to be the night before his birthday, so are there places that we can get in free/cheap based on either the fact that it is a bachelor party or a birthday party? I'd also like recommendations based on the girls, having a fun & relaxed atmosphere, etc. There will be both males and females attending the party.
2. Are there any bars or nightclubs that have an 18+ night on Saturdays? One of the members of the wedding party is under 21. I know that he can accompany us to the strip clubs that don't serve alcohol, but if at some point we want to go dance, is there anywhere that we can all get into?
Thanks for your help!

can anyone recommend a tax preparer in minneapolis, preferably in Uptown or Downtown that has weekend or late-night hours (after 5pm)? i do not drive, so i need to be able to take the bus or walk to said tax person.
my husband and i have never had to pay taxes before, but this year the tax software i bought is telling me we OWE $3,200! i have a feeling there's something i'm doing wrong, or one of us isn't having enough deducted from our paychecks. we have no kids, no deductions, no stocks or bonds, no health or dental expenses, or anything that we can itemize. the only thing we have is my husband's retirement fund that he just set up this year. so, yeah, i need a professional to help me out. it's really stressing me out big time, especially since we're pretty much at the poverty line and the thought of giving $3,200 in addition to whatever we paid during the year to the government sends me into a bloody rage.
thanks in advance.

I'm organizing a panel at Macalester of activist whose work revolves around (ending) the Iraq war. I'm looking for people to be on said panel.
Who is awesome that deserves recognition in the twin cities?
Who should I invite?

I'll be moving to the area in early March (yeah... went from hypothetical to "OK, 3 weeks- GO!"), and one of the things I'd like to bring with me is my hope chest. One little "leg" that it stands on is no longer present; my mother was working on finding an area woodworker/furniture place that would repair it, but due to my move (CT to MN), she wants to send it with me so I can get it fixed in MN. Does anyone know of anyone in the area that can/would do that kind of work (obviously pending pictures, estimates, etc)?
It's fairly old, I believe it's cedar, and it's just in need of a little leg (I assume cut it to match the others, and glue it or screw it on, done!).

I think I've got *another* cavity. I haven't been to a dentist since we moved here in September. Any recommendations? Let it be said that I have a bad gag reflex and can be a bit of a baby. My dentist is a 9 hour drive or I'd go there because he's the only one I've been able to handle (or that's been able to handle me). I'm in St Louis Park, but literally a half a block from Plymouth.

I've got the option of buying a Dodge Stratus and I checked the memories and the websites within. Does anyone here have a personal recommendation? It's either a 97 or a 98 with 124,000. My parents know the fellow, so we'd get it cheap (2,000-2,500). I'm printing off a list of recalls to check on the vehicle ( I bought a 98 Ford Contour and it was a COMPLETE FVCKUP). Wikipedia says that 1996-1999 were decent cars, but that you want to watch out for the ones made afterward.
Are Dodges good? Bad? Ugly? Any other TC used car lots with interesting vehicles for cheap? Can't afford much more than 4,000.
Thanks for any advice!

A friend of a friend wants to have a very small wedding ceremony (12 people total) THIS Saturday morning. The couple was planning to show up at Cowles Conservatory (by the Walker Art Center). What they didn't realize until yesterday is that there's a $400 fee. As that is a larger cost than they were anticipating, they are looking for some alternative ideas.
They can travel to a certain degree, but would prefer to be as close to central Minneapolis as possible. The couple would like a space that is warm with garden greenery and/or natural decor. The space would need to be available this Saturday morning (11am to noon, or so), and preferably it would be free or very inexpensive.
I found this site to Minnesota Public Gardens, although I'm guessing all of them have a fee for a wedding party, etc.
Do you all have any other suggestion?
Thank you

Hello Twin Cities Dwellers!
I'm moving to the Twin Cities this weekend from Madison, WI.
Perhaps one of the odder things on my mind has been the prevalence of Farmer's Markets in the Twin Cities (obviously, in a better season for it than now). Are there any good ones? Or am I better off signing up for a CSA? (Hence why I'm asking now - need to decide soonish).
Also, do you have any good coops you'd recommend for finding produce during the winter months? I'm going to be living about 3 miles north of the UofM to give you some idea of where I am.
Thanks in advance!

Anyone know where I can procure some of this tasty fruit? I did find it at Byerly's in SLP, but it's freakin' $10/pound! I spent $23 on two of these babies last night. *dies*
If you know the best time or where the best place to get them in the state, LEMME KNOW! Bonus points for prices less than $10/pound! :)

I am going to be doing an architectural analysis of a building in the very near future for a class. While we can do something as ordinary as our house, I would like to do mine on a building that is just a tad bit interesting.
Can be intriguing either on the outside or the inside. Obvious buildings like the Weisman, as well as more obscure structures. Really, just about anything that you think is deemed worthy or being looked at. Minneapolis, St. Paul, the 'burbs - I'm willing to drive anywhere.
Ideas?

Is for sale.
Dear Amazon friends,
I want to let you all know that I have decided to leave the bookstore. I have worked at Amazon for over twenty years and have come to know many of you and cherish the connections I have made here. But it is time for a change in my life, and I want to move in different directions. I had hoped that the younger staff currently working at the store would be able to carry it on, but because of the financial condition of the store, that is not a possibility.
So we have decided to sell Amazon Bookstore. We are hoping to find a buyer/buyers within the next few months.
Amazon Bookstore has been a vital part of the Twin Cities feminist and GLBT community for over 37 years. In recent years, Amazon has also functioned as a neighborhood bookstore, providing a focal point for literary and progressive books and events. We are hoping that there will be an individual or a group of individuals that want to carry on the vision of the store or recreate it into a vision of their own.
Please email me at the store, barb@amazonbookstorecoop.com for a copy of our sale proposal and with any questions you might have.
It has been a great privilege to have worked at Amazon Bookstore for so long, and I feel very grateful to all of you for the support you have shown the store over the years. I hope in the upcoming months that I get to see many of you to express my gratitude personally.

A friend wants to take me out to dinner as a thank-you gift. She keeps telling me to pick the place. This is, of course, causing me to draw a complete blank on restaraunts. I don't actually eat out that much, unless you include lunches at El Loro with my co-workers.
I have a few favorite places around town that I adore, but I was kinda thinking it would be fun to try someplace I have never been.
I'm looking for something not super expensive. Preferably not Italian or sushi. Good food, for sure, but also a nice wine list and interesting atmosphere.
Some of my current favorite places and why I love them:
El Meson Amazing food, fantastic wine list, and friendly staff. I particularly recommend the cevice and the key lime pie. And there's a scallop dish on their tapas menu that is heavenly.
The Independent The food is not super fancy, but it's always very tasty. They change their menu seasonally and it seems like they are always trying new things. And if you're on a budget you have to love the $5 happy hour menu.
The Times OK, really the main reason I love the Times is for their martini list. They have yummy wings, though.
Pizza Nea Pizza Nea so reminds me of being in Italy, except with far more adventurous topping choices than I ever saw on the menus in Florence- like artichoke hearts, prosciutto and capers.

I... suck at maps and have a terrible sense of direction.
I need to figure out a location for an apartment that has a convenient commute for three people who work in three different places.
One works in Golden Valley, one works in Minnetonka, and one works on the West Side of Saint Paul.
Is there some magical wonderful area that would result in a commute that is (approximately) 15-20 minutes for everyone? Especially the Saint Paul person because that person is me?
If you're going to say Minneapolis, please be neighborhood-specific. Help out a fool, please!

This is a question for two communities.
What local places to eat, coffee shops, stores, grocery stores: carry, organic food, coffee, things to eat, drink?
This can include any of the local stores, or farmers markets, etc that you know of.
Locally owned or national chain.

Anyone got any recommendations?

I have done several searches online and couldn't come up with a concrete answer to my question. I'm now waiting for call backs from people at the links I did find.
My situation is that we moved into our apartment 3 months ago and had signed a 3 month lease that took us to the end of January. That would put us on a month-to-month lease now. We received a notice the night of January 26th, saying our building would be turned into condos. They gave us the proper notice and with the 120-days stated.
We tried to reach our landlord immediately the next day (January 27th) to ask her a couple questions and to inform her we would be giving our notice in writing. The law requires a 30-day notice if you are leaving before the 120 days. Not a problem. However, our landlord never answered or returned calls. Yesterday (February 7th) she emailed me and informed us we would be responsible for ALL of March's rent, even if we wanted to move out earlier. We've already found a place we like for a March 1st move in date.
Now, the law does not specifically state that you have to give notice in time for a FULL rental period. It says 30 days. We offered to pay rent for the 8 days into March, even though we DID legitimately try to give notice for what would have been 30 days before March 1st but the landlord did NOT call us back or answer our calls.
Has anyone dealt with the apartment-to-condo conversion situation before? Are we in the wrong with wanting to move March 1st, even if the notice would be counted as being given today? The landlord's reasoning was "if we let you move out a few days into the month, we'd have to allow other tenants to do the same if they wanted to." But WE tried to give notice. She just wasn't allowing us to.
Help!!! Yes, I consulted the MN housing websites online but all I could find was the 30-day written notice policy. Do we have to pay for a full month of rent into the next month? Thanks in advance.
**EDIT: I wasn't trying to use a phone call to give notice. I just wanted a few questions answered BEFORE I gave the written notice :)**

Hi all,
I'm a potential incoming resident of the Minneapolis/St Paul area (my boyfriend's gotten a job offer from a company in Shoreview). I'm looking to go back to school at UoM, so we're looking for a place to rent (ideally a townhouse/condo or a house) somewhere agreeable between the UoM campuses and Shoreview. I've been suggested everything from Roseville, Falcon Heights, St Anthony Park and a few other areas I can't quite remember. Any suggestions on places to look, especially for a pair of young (24 & 30) folks, or do those sound like fairly good starting points?
I'm also going to be car hunting (since I hate to drive, but will likely need to now). My boyfriend is from Wyoming (the state, not the town) and told me that a lot of vehicles in Wyoming have the engine block heaters in them for the winter. I'll probably be buying a new car, and should I look at getting one of those or is it overkill?
Thanks... and hopefully we'll be out there in a couple of months. :)

I just saw the touring production of Sweeney Todd last night at the State Theater, and it was fantastic. I highly encourage anyone who likes dark musicals, or who can appreciate a dark sense of humor, to go. The touring production has the same staging as the 2005 Broadway revival starring Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone, and even has a few of the same cast members from Broadway. Go here and scroll to the bottom of the page to listen to samples from the 2005 cast recording.
The production is unlike any other musical I've ever seen, in that the actors play the instruments of the orchestra while they're on stage. Each actor plays more than one instrument, and the instruments are constantly being handed off to other actors to play. It sounds kind of dodgy when I write it, but it works beautifully on stage.

Hey, I'm looking for somewhere CHEAP to do my taxes this year, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I'm in the Eden Prairie area, and don't mind driving around for a good deal.
I have 3 W2s and 2 of those CRP renter things.
I went to H&R block last year, but I can't remember how much they charged. (so I can't get their new customer deal.)
Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone :)
A quick word about an upcoming show I'm involved it, opening on Thursday (preview) this week at the Old Arizona Theater. Come see one of your local WGA writers, currently on strike, throw herself headlong into theater because, well, she loves it and it's better than going completely bonkers while waiting for the AMPTP to get its head out of its ass!
Here's the Quick Info behind cut tags:
Here's who we are and what we do!
Over the course of the last twelve weeks, ten young students ages 8 to 14 (nine actors and our stage manager) have worked to bring you this production of Recess!
They have received formal instruction in drama, voice, dance and movement, worked on their understanding of drama theory, musical theory and endured quite a few sessions of ?no fish!? and ?chew your words!? and ?use that soft palate!? at the end of my baton. It?s been quite a journey for everyone - for our experienced Resident Cast as much as for some of our new junior cast members who are taking their first steps onto the stage with this production.
It?s our philosophy that talented kids thrive in this kind of creative environments. Groups at our Workshop are kept small in order for each student to get a chance to work on specific skills. This also allows us to develop and nurture specific skills and talents unique to every child who walks into our Workshop and to give him or her a chance to shine.
The Synopsis!Okay, class, pop quiz time. What do you get when you mix a young substitute teacher with a classroom full of the seemingly dumbest (and funniest) pupils found anywhere? A wise-cracking musical that's sure to put a smile on the principal's face, that's what. When Miss Quackenbush takes over a class at the Little Red Schoolhouse, she soon discovers why the previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. Unless the likable but hare-brained pupils can pass a simple exam, they won't advance to the next grade. It's one inane answer after another as Miss Quackenbush tries to promote this bunch of blockheads outta here. It won't be easy, though. Only a fool would want to leave this school.

So me and a friend are planning on moving to St. Paul in June. I have been looking on rent.com/apartment finder and browsed some craig's list. I was wondering if any of you knew of some places in the Highland Park area that have like upstairs of a home for rent(2 bedroom) We were kinda leaning more towards something like that. Any help is appreciated :)

I moved to a new apartment in August. I received my renters rebate form in the mail from my current landlord, but nothing from my previous one. Do you only get to declare your rent from where you currently live? Is there a penalty if my previous landlord doesn't forward the necessary form?
Thanks!

Just wanted to let everyone know that yes, it's okay to go to the caucuses as 'uncommitted' if your candidate of choice hasn't been divinated by the DFL on the MN ballot.

Hi all!
Are any of you familiar with the area near Prior and Minnehaha (east of Vandalia, west of Snelling and University) in St. Paul? My fiance and I are moving into the area next month, and being a suburbanite from southern Anoka County (more familiar with Minneapolis), I'm not familiar with St. Paul at all. I've heard from a few people that it's "not the greatest area," but no one will really elaborate. Is it just a generalized fear, some stigma I'm not aware of, or is there a real need to be concerned? If so, what specifically is there to be concerned about?
I've tried checking for police reports for the area, but had little success. I'm not a paranoid xenophobe by any means, so if it's just a matter of more "affluent" types overreacting, I can deal. Any input you can offer would be appreciated!

Just wanted to share that the mn dor is kicking butt on refunds right now. I e-filed my taxes on Saturday and woke to find my refund direct deposited into my account today. Now I have fairly simple taxes and not a lot of deductions, so everyone's experience may be different. I just wanted to let people know that if you are one of those wait till the last minute people, you may benefit from filing early. Of course that's only if you get a refund. If you owe taxes, make the bastards wait.

I don't know if this is allowed - if it isn't it can be deleted...
I just want to sort of fill in whoever lives in the "airport/VA" area. . Right outside of the VA gates (Basically on 54th and Minnehaha) ... right by the lightrail. . . .
There is someone shooting out car windows. They are either by the hotel and hiding or inside of a house or a yard shooting pretty good. My boyfriend has had his truck window shot out as well as about six other people have had their car window shot out.
So this is just a FYI so you don't travel that way.
Is there anyone I can report this to? - OTHER THEN the cops?
We called the cops without explaining it was probably a bebe gun shot and it took them an hour and a half just to check it out. . There were two cops there today . so it is an ongoing problem.
Thank You so much for the help - sorry if this is outrageous.

Heya. I'm a hairstylist in advanced training at Juut in Uptown and I have a few spaces open for models if anyone is interested. Juut models pay only $5 and get the whole pressure point massage/cut/style/etc included at no extra charge. For the bob haircuts, a bob doesn't have to be mom-hair. It can be a severe, inverted cut above the shoulders. It just has to be at least like 4" long to be considered a bob. Or if you're into mom hair, right on. We can do that, too.
For the following, female models are needed:
Bob haircut, April 1st at either 10:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm or 4pm
Short haircut (1-4", can be a trim from an existing haircut) April 1st at either 10:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm or 4pm
Again, this is at Juut Uptown for $5. If you have any questions, feel free to respond here or email me at lauranova@gmail.com. Please don't send me any photos of the cut you want in an attachment, but feel free to link them here.

Hope this helps!
Also, a Poll... I'm just curious, I'm not involved in any weirdo pollster whatnot.
