Thanks so much for all the NYE hotel suggestions, they were very helpful! Now my plans have been slightly foiled and I'm looking for where there will be decent parties on NYE. I heard rumors about something going down at the Millenium Hotel (but I don't really even know quite what is going down). Besides that I have only heard of nothing really. Anyone have any suggestions of venues that will be having music, dancing and a generally good time for NYE? Thanks so much (in advance), this community is wonderful!

Hi Everyone! I'm sorry if this is out of bounds but I have a really quick question that I'm hoping you guys can help me with. I'm moving from Los Angeles to Minneapolis at the end of January and I'm looking at living in St. Louis Park, specifically I found a few rentals near Excelsior and Brookside/Alabama/Zarthan by the Meadowbrook Golf Course. Is anyone familiar with that area and if so any opinions? Good and Bad. Thanks so much, Happy New Year everyone!

Residents of Minneapolis and Seattle are the most bookish and well-read, according to results from a new survey released today of the most literate American cities.

The survey focused on 69 U.S. cities with populations of 250,000 or above. Jack Miller of Central Connecticut State University chose six key indicators to rank literacy. These included newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment and Internet resources.

Overall, the top 10 most literate (and wired) cities included:

1?Minneapolis, Minn.
2?Seattle, Wash.
3?St. Paul, Minn.
4?Denver, Colo.
5?Washington, D.C.
6?St. Louis, Mo
.
7?San Francisco, Calif.
8?Atlanta, Ga.
9?Pittsburgh, Pa.
10?Boston, Mass.

Minneapolis, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Denver and Washington, D.C., have made the top 10 every year since 2003, when the survey first launched.

Some cities that didn't make it to the overall top 10, however, did strut their stuff in one of the six key literacy indicators. For instance, while Newark, N.J., was the 49th most literate city overall, it shared the top spot for newspaper circulation with Washington, D.C.

Plano, Texas, ranking 51st on the overall most-literate-city list, came in second for educational attainment. The education ranking included two factors: the percentage of the city's adult population with a high school diploma or higher and those with a bachelor's degree or higher.

Cleveland, Ohio, scored the highest for library resources, with St. Louis coming in second. The library category was a measure of five variables, such as the number of library professional staff and total branch libraries relative to library patrons.

Atlanta and Boston took the lead spots in the Internet resources category.

The District of Columbia and St. Louis reported the most large magazine publishers and large journals. New York City, which ranked 28th on the overall list, came in third in the periodical publishing category.

Hi,

Do any of you have a recommendation for your favorite place to get second hand furniture. I am looking for some dining room chairs and other furniture items. I've been awfully disappointed with Savers on Lake street in this capacity.

Any ideas?

Where is there a good thrift shop/other store that I could find a cheap, small chandelier?

Bonus points for vintage!

Hidey ho, Twin Citians--

My friend is moving into a new house. She's got a new fridge in place in the kitchen, but the old one (came with the house) is sitting, unloved and slightly broken, in the living room.

It would probably be usable if its minor problems could be fixed, but we are neither smart enough nor strong enough to fix it or haul it to the curb. Anybody know of an organization that will take a slightly-damaged but otherwise totally awesome fridge out of her house? (We thought of ARC but we doubt they will actually remove it from the living room--pretty sure they only do curb service.)

Many, many thanks!

I''m looking for ideas... my sister is flying in Saturday at noon from NYC, her first visit back home in 3 years.  We're all very excited, and are meeting her at the airport.  Any suggestions where we can get lunch?  I'd like it to be somewhat near the airport, somewhat inexpensive, not too pretentious, but not Perkins either (sis is a cook in NYC)... and has to be kid-friendly.  I'm brain-dead, can't think of anything.  Any suggestions?  (If anyone has any ideas for things we can do together after lunch, inexpensively, I'm all ears... the kids have already been to MIA a week ago with one of their sets of grandparents, tho, so that one's out.)

TIA!

My google-fu is failing me today.....I'm wondering if anyone here could recommend a massage therapist that would be open today or tomorrow (I know, last minute....but I'm in pain) in the St. Paul area.  Minneapolis ok too if they are good and available!

Hey Everybody,

The Longfellow Community Council is having their General Membership Meeting with the theme of BEST MEETING EVER. It should be a great event with free food and art activities for kids.

We are currently looking for some live entertainment with the preference that they are from the neighborhood and family friendly. Does anyone know of anyone or is interested in playing? The gig is on the 23rd and there may be a stipend available.

Thanks!

I have been given a gorgeous antique ring that I would like to have sized (it's too small). Does anyone have a good recommendation on where to go and how much I might expect to spend?

I have also inherited a vintage fur wrap (like a little cute capelet thing from the late 50s or early 60s). But the clasp is coming off. Does anyone know where I might be able to get that repaired?

I am in need of the following items for a TOTALLY HILARIOUS birthday present...as soon as possible. The genius of my idea just struck me on the way home from the grocery store, and the birthday is on the 29th.

* Malibu Ken doll (or any Ken, really, I just need some tropical shorts/speedo to go with him)

* Ken doll sized sports car in white

* doll sized shotgun/hunting items

* doll sized can of Diet Pepsi

* doll sized beard to attach to Ken's face

* doll sized Spongebob doll or other item(s)

Please comment if you have these items/know where to find them. Any/all help is greatly appreciated--thanks!

Does anyone else live on a block in St. Paul that looks like it was plowed, but where they didn't tow any of the cars that were left on the street? This is my first winter living in the city, so I just figured if you were on the street during a snow emergency, you got towed. But they appear to have gone easy on the cars still on the street this morning on my block.

Due to a death in my family, we are now in possession of a blood glucose monitor and a CPAP, along with a few other medical items. We have no use for these items, but it seems a shame to junk them.

Do you guys know if there is any place that would take these items as a donation?

I did a quick search on Google, but honestly my searches weren't leading me anywhere.

I no longer live in the Twin Cities, but I'm spending my new year in Uptown and was wondering if anyone could suggest some hotels in or around Uptown that would be decent for staying at new year's eve. I'm thinking probably most of what I could find would be in St. Louis Park, but I really have no idea so any help would be so greatly appreciated!

(I already know of at least a couple of places where I can get it done, but I'm hoping for personal recommendations.)

Tomorrow night (Friday the 21st) the Cedar Cultural Center will celebrate the longest night of the year by holding their annual Winter Solstice Drum, Dance and Fire jam. This is a really fun event which goes all night long, featuring jugglers and fire walkers and many, many drummers. See the Cedar Cultural Center's description of the event here. I went last year and had a fantastic time; see my post about it, along with some photographs and videos of the firewalkers here. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the opening ceremony is at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00. Well worth it, in my opinion. Kids are welcome. Bring your drum and your dancing feet.

Hey Everyone,

I know that this time of year is crazy for a lot of people and for procrastinator's like myself it's time to start shopping for the holidays.

If you fear the mall and are looking for less commercial christmas gifts I would like to recommend the Midtown Global Market.

I got gifts for every single person in my family from here. I think it is the best place to go, you are supporting local businesses, most everything is reasonably priced and it's just got a great atmosphere.

So, if you are looking for bath and body goods, candles, art, cool knick knacks (I hate that word), kids' games and toys, gourmet food, Pashmina scarves, gift certificates, and interesting items from all over the world please come!

It is located in the heart of South Minneapolis on Lake Street and Elliot and is on several bus lines.

PS I do not work for midtown global market but I just want to support this great project!

She will now be signing 3 books per wristband!

No photos with Rachael Ray, you must put your camera phone/digital camera away when you are approaching the front of the line.

Tomorrow is going to suck like whoa.

So, here's a crazy one for all of you. I need to find someone who can open a file created on Excel version 1.0 (came out in 1985). These files have to be opened on Excel version 4 (as recent as '92!) or earlier on a mac (found excel 4 for PC and it told me to use the mac they were created on). So, my question is thus:
Does anyone know of anywhere I could go that might have such old mac hardware and software? I've heard rumors of someplace that specializes in running old systems for just such a case but it is not remembered what the name of the place is.
2007-12-17 13:35:22
Does anyone know of any feeds that provide updated calendars of what's going on for arts and entertainment? I try to visit every venue's website but then I forget after a few months and end up missing some cool stuff.
2007-12-16 14:42:51
Just an FYI--

If anyone was planning on coming to the Rachael Ray signing at the downtown Borders on Tuesday, the time has been moved from 2pm to 1pm. She does have a history of being late so of course things may not start on time. A limited number of wristbands will be given out starting at 9am, and she is only signing 5 books per person, and only the titles from her current publisher.

If you already purchased the book, please bring your receipt!

Come say hi to me, as I'll be stuck in the cafe pretty much all damn day.

Are you an artist or work in the arts and are looking for a place to live beginning this month or next? The Carleton Artist Lofts have a few vacancies in both 1 and 2 bedrooms. It is considered affordable housing so there are income restrictions. I believe it's 33,000/yr for a one person household and 37,680/yr for a two-person household.

  • Open to artists of all mediums (painting, crafting, dancing, sculptors, actors, writers, etc) or people employed in a cultural organization
  • Each loft features heated cement floors, washer and dryer, dishwasher, fridge with icemaker and central AC
  • Historic features in every loft including exposed brick
  • Buildings feature a dry studio (painting, woodwork, etc), a wet studio (clay and ceramics) with a kiln, music rehearsal studio, and dance studio
  • Every hallway is an art gallery featuring current residents' art
  • Community room with full kitchen and 3 flat screens and XM radio
  • Rooftop patio with gas bbq grills and gas fire pit
  • Fitness room
  • Dogs and cats are accepted (w/ additional deposit)
  • Great area right off 94 and 280 with easy access to both downtowns and almost all campuses.
  • 1 year lease
  • Rent is around $850 for a 1 bedroom and $1100 for a two bedroom. Heat, water, sewer, and garbage included. You pay for electricity.
If you're interested send me an email: spinler at gmail dot com. I'm not the landlord. I'm just a current tenant passing along information. And these places are extremely nice. They look a lot like some of the expensive loft condos in the warehouse district. Also for students, you cannot be a full-time student unless there are two of you in the household and the other person is NOT a student.

I know I posted the other day about my new blog, but it wasn't really going yet and now that the juicy stuff has been put to the web, I think more of you might like to see the direction I'm go with it.

You can subscribe frostbiteblog or here.

I've included my most recent entry below the cut.

California is hardly known for its ice rinks, so as a child, I followed the best team in the world - Wayne Gretzky's Edmonton Oilers. With Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr, the Oilers were the greatest show on ice. At the time, it wasn't uncommon to watch Sunday afternoon hockey on ABC. This was before the days cable television took over the airwaves and well before the days of the San Jose Sharks. Before the Sharks came along, Gretzky moved on, leaving Canada, for Hollywood with his beautiful blond wife.

They were a couple made for California -- well before David and Victoria Beckham took over the tabloids earlier this year. I was never a die hard hockey fan. Any Californian prior to Gretzky's trek west to the Los Angeles Kings that told you they were was a) either lying or b) not a native Californian. Gretzky made Californians leave the hockey highlights on while watching Sports Center, but not much else. It didn't change anything within the culture. I've always been a believer that unless you come from a state with real winters you cannot be a true hockey fan.

This opinion has only strengthened since I moved to here. While the North Stars left for warmer clients, hockey never left the blood of Minnesotans. I love seeing both hipsters and aging, graying sports fans in retro Minnesota North Stars jackets. Even at the lowest level fandom - fashion -the North Stars are still in the hearts of many Minnesotans. I should make it clear. I'm talking about the North Stars and not the bastardized version now playing in Dallas. If the Sharks ever left San Jose for another city, I know that the same love would not still be there for the team. There would not be retro Sharks jerseys worn by hipsters on Haight Street. You'll never hear a San Francisco Giants fan debate the merits of the Cow Palace and HP Pavilion (the Sharks former and current arenas) with a pan handler as I did last year at a Twins vs. A's game. I pretended to stare off searching for my friend, but instead I was amazed the common denominator that can be met between Minnesotans of all socio-economic backgrounds.

Tonight the Sharks thrashed the Wild 4-1 - finally looking like the team the pundits and the fans expected the Sharks to be. The Wild play the most boring style of hockey imaginable. Only in Minnesota would fans permit such a boring style, substance over style. The most entertaining part of the match was not Steve Bernier two goals, but the stark difference in the way the two teams local newspapers covered the match.

The San Jose Mercury's upbeat, anything is better than yesterday, we're on a roll theme balanced against the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune's doomsday, we're never going to win again, this is the end if things don't change theme was hilarious.

Give them a read... SJ Mercury and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune.

I'm not the biggest hockey fan. Then again I did grow up a 49er fan with Jerry Rice as my hero, so who can fault me for being a California boy at heart?

Does anybody know of any classic rock/oldies/disco dance nights in the Twin Cities? Or somewhere that plays terrible wedding-type music (Love Shack, YMCA, Twist 'n Shout, etc.)? My parents are looking for somewhere to go dancing and don't exactly have the hippest taste in music.

Hello there, Twin Cities!

Could anyone tell me where I might find a dress a cute goth boy won't be disappointed in seeing me in? I'm looking for something more formal and not from Hot Topic. I'd also prefer not to spend $300 on a single dress!

I am new to the area, staying with a friend for a few months for a change in scenery. I only packed essentials- I didn't think I'd be asked on a date by a cute goth boy my first week here! I keep thinking I should cancel the date since I am pretty plain Jane and feel like such a faker thinking I can pull this off. My friend has encouraged me to try asking you guys first so here goes nothing!

I have been on the phone and internet ALL DAY trying to find someone to install my already purchased remote start. My husband bought this "Prime Start" remote car starter for Christmas last year via Ebay and now I can't find anyone to install the thing! I tired going to their website to find a list of reatailers, and it's now a prepaid medical insurance website?!

I called TONS of places, but they don't install it unless they sold it to you.

Do you know of any place in the metro area that might be able to install it for me?

Thanks for your time!

If so, I'd love to hear some feedback on what experiences you've had and if you thought it was a good deal.

Thanks.
