Does anyone know the details on where Barack's going to be on Saturday? I heard he is going to be in the Twin Cities!!
2008-01-28 17:49:35
Heya folks,
I recently started a new job. Part of this job is representing the department at the Chinese New Year. Our department event is next week on Tuesday--so online orders would be cutting it too close for my comfort. So!

Where in the Twin Cities can I find a Chinese silk brocade jacket?

I'm hoping to not break the bank here since the new job came with a juicy pay cut. The boss (who is Chinese) said that I would be ok if I found something that "looks Chinese" so I don't have to bend over backwards to find something terribly authentic. Ideally, I'd like something green or blue (absolutely not white or black), but realize I may have better luck with red or gold.

Please, kind people, lead me.

Either there are no Girl Scouts in my neighborhood, there are only lazy Girl Scouts in my neighborhood, or I'm not home when they come by. My cousins are now apparently too cool for Girl Scouts, and nobody at work has daughters. Anybody have a Scout who needs to sell another 10 or so boxes, or know of any troops with booths (particularly if they sell the ABC cookies as opposed to the Little Brownie Bakers ones)? Am I too late?

Hey everyone! I checked the memories, but they were from February 2006 so I would imagine quality of cell carriers have changed quite a bit.   I'm looking for a new cell phone, currently I'm on Virgin Mobile (which has been good but I need to grow up and get a proper phone). From the last I read, recommendations were for Tmobile and Verizon. I am looking into Sprint and Verizon for voice and data (I want to get a Blackberry for contact management and what not). Any other suggestions or forewarnings regarding carriers? Thanks!
2008-01-27 20:44:43
Checked the memories, didn't see anything on this topic.

Fellow LJ'ers, I am in need of your assistance and wisdom. My largest suitcase has developed an issue with its telescoping handle, in that the push button in the handle activates only one side, not both. The handle won't go back in unless you open the case, find the mechanism and manually push in the spring loaded pop outs. Any recommendations for where to have it fixed? I'd prefer the west side, but if I have to go east, I will.

This isn't time critical - my next trip isn't scheduled until either late February, for sure in April. And if I have to scrap or donate it, so be it.

And on the flip side, if I do have to get a new suitcase, where would I get luggage that has four wheels on the bottom, not just two? What's your favorite brand of luggage and why? What about rolling computer cases that are carry on size?

Thank you for your kind assistance.

Any local burners out there? This year will be my virgin burn and I'm in search of travel buddies, camp mates and local resources to network with people before the event.

The man burns in only 216 days!

Do any of you know what the going rate for answering services in the area would be?

I am specifically searching for information on how much an answering service would charge for a low volume medical office, 18 hours per week. The hours would be three days a week from 11am-5pm.

I am finding websites but they are not giving me rates without contacting them. Can anyone give me even a ballpark idea of what the going rate in the area would be? Per month?

If a person (me) was looking to connect with and befriend some radical people of color in the twin cities, where would you suggest going?

edit: Wow, intense conversation, people! I promise you, I have friends that are white, in fact, most of them are, I'm just looking to DIVERSIFY a little bit.

I need to find a place to hold a meeting the evening of February 12 at which there will be a presentation. I need to find a restaurant which has such facilities, and where the food is good, but affordable. We've previously used Steak & Ale, so something along those lines - cuisine, price, and facilities - is what I'm looking for. The restaurant should be in the eastern half of the metro, preferably in the Eagan area or within, say, 10 to 15 miles of that. edit: We will be having around 25 people.

If you know of such a place which could accommodate us, please reply here. Thanks.

I am trying to decide between the new nano and a couple alternatives. Do you guys know by any chance who sells MP3 players besides Circuit City, Best Buy, Microcenter and Office Max/Depot To be a little more specific I found a player online that I would like to take a look at before buying. It's a Cowon D2 - costs the same as Nano but has a few more options.

I hear gunshot-like sounds in my neighborhood (Cedar-Riverside) pretty regularly, but every once in a while I hear them in quick succession over and over again. I thought maybe they were fireworks or something, but this morning they woke me up at 2am and 6:30am, both unlikely times for fireworks.

What could I possibly be hearing?

Hi all. I'm plugging this for a friend who is having trouble finding cool, diligent employees in the area. The job is with SiteImprove Inc., which is based in Denmark, very successful, and just starting out an American chapter. Things are going well, and he would like to expand.

Anyone know of any clubs or bars that play headbanger music?  (South metro/suburbs ideal, but we can drive.)  My s.o. and I love 7th street entry, but metal acts are few and far between there.  If I could find a place that either has bands or just plays that kind of music so I can grab a beer, I'd be happy.  FTR, I'm 40ish and s.o. is 50ish, if that matters.  TIA!

Hi all,

I need some help finding an apartment in the Apple Valley / Eagan / South St Paul / West St. Paul and anywhere in between those two locations along 35E / 52 that accepts dogs ( 20lbs or less ) and costs between $600-$700, studio or one bedroom.

So far I've found a couple places, but I know that more have to be out there. Please help!

Does anybody know if the laws on getting a rental deposit back are the same for commercial spaces as for residential ones? I've read online that in MN if the landlord fails to return to deposit in 21 days, they owe double the amount. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

If it's true, I'm wondering if it only applies of the landlord acted in "bad faith" or if it applies to something as simple as incompetent management just not returning it on time.

Any info would be appreciated. I've found conflicting information online.

Oh, twin_cities, what sad times these are. A couple of years ago, Vlasic carried a line of sour pickles; they discontinued them. Since that time, I've been unable to get any more of my precious. They seem to be a predominantly New York deli type of thing, which is fine except the cost of shipping jars of pickles is kind of ridiculous.

(Note: I don't mean dill pickles that are particularly tart. Full sours and half sours are their own separate thing.)

Anyway, last night at Lund's, I found some half sours in the refrigerated case. I was so happy. Then I got them home and tasted them. They tasted like cucumbers in garlic water. I thought I was going to gag and promptly got out the rum to get rid of the flavor... and the memory.

My inquiries: first, if anyone here is a pickle connoisseur like myself and has any clue what I'm even talking about. (Maybe we can become PICKLE PALS.) Second, I've tried every chain store (Cub, Lunds/Byerly's, Kowalski's, Rainbow, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's) to no avail, and as such, does anyone know of local deli-type places that might be able to get me my fix?

And fair warning to other pickle lovers... DO NOT BUY

Upstage! Presents: RECESS!
at the Old Arizona Theater, 2821 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis MN

Okay, class, pop quiz time. What do you get when you mix a young substitute teacher with a classroom full of the seemingly dumbest (and funniest) pupils found anywhere? A wise-cracking musical that's sure to put a smile on the principal's face, that's what. When Miss Quackenbush takes over a class at the Little Red Schoolhouse, she soon discovers why the previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. Unless the likable but hare-brained pupils can pass a simple exam, they won't advance to the next grade. It's one inane answer after another as Miss Quackenbush tries to promote this bunch of blockheads outta here. It won't be easy, though. Only a fool would want to leave this school.

We are also fundraising for our inner-city kids programs so we can offer a couple of scholarships this spring. It costs approximately $170 to put a child through a 12 week program with us (no, we don't get paid.) That covers supplies, rent, utilities, storage... barely. We need help! :) Every little bit counts.

I need to get rid of a 1988 Chevy Corsica. It's got over 150,000 miles on it and it is ugly as sin, it leaks oil so I have to put in a quart or two every couple of weeks--but it's a great runner. I've been driving it 4 years and I've never had to do anything exept replace the battery and tires. (tires are less than 6 month old.) It would be perfect for someone who just needs something to get from A to B. My parents gave me a new (to me) car. I'd actually like to keep it and let my hubby use it to learn on, but I just don't have anywhere to store it. I'm looking to get about $500 on it, but I'm flexible since it's so old and ugly.

Interested? E-mail me at: I_eat_sugar@yahoo.com

Any tips on selling a car in the TC?

Is this news to just me or can I be the first to say that Kowalskis is selling HALF pies now. That's right. If you don't think you can handle a whole pie, you can get HALF THE PIE.

How f-ing brilliant is this.

I wet myself a little when I saw that. Then squealed "holy shit!" near an old woman and did a little two-step to the cash registers with a strawberry rhubarb half-pie in hand.

I heart Kowalskis muchly.

At least the one on Diamond Lake and Lyndale.

I also now hate the Byerly's in Ridgedale but you'll have to read my blog to find out why.

Hooray for pie and Kowalskis. Their homey decor makes me feel loved.

Just wanted to give the twin cities a heads-up about a darling cafe I found last night, and to make clear first of all that I am not affiliated with it in any business way... I am just a very pleased consumer.

It's called Cafe Juliahna and it sits in west St Paul just south of downtown on the corner of Smith and Annapolis. Which is rather convenient for me but may not be for you. You can reach them either via a 15 minute 67 bus ride from downtown Saint Paul or park in their parking lot on the other side of the street.

It is owned and operated (and seemingly fully staffed at the moment, with some help from her family) by Sherry Asplund, who apparently was a manager at the Wedge co-op where she learned about natural and organic food and who named the cafe after her daughter, Juliahna (who was also there for a little bit, along with daddy). She is a very pleasant, bright woman who shared organic gummy bears with us and joked about exactly what their colouring content black carrot juice might be. ("Moldy carrots?" "I'm sure it's a delicacy somewhere.")

The space is really lovely, with tables by the doors and windows on either side of the long bar brimming with baked goodies, a small children's section, and more seating surrounding and extending back from the bar. It is an above-average sized space that feels very homey. The bathroom is particularly just like home. Sherry takes great care in creating this atmosphere.
There is the quintessential locally produced art, mainly paintings and scarves. and apparently live music some nights, a schedule for which is on the website.
Because pretty much everything is organic, each meal food item averages out at probably $7.00 and comes with chips. We had a delicious grilled 3-cheese sandwich with tomatoes and dijon, and I had her yummy lemon ginger hot tonic. There is a juicer, and next on my list to try is her spinach beet apple juice, and her hummus hemp sandwich.
My husband had her latte, which this diva barista tasted and declared edible.
Beans are roasted on-site.

I just wanted to let you all know because there were very few of us there last night and despite the slightly obscure location that seems wrong. The hours are a bit funny, but that would seem to just be a part of the business being so young (first anniversary in February) - I'm sure if more traffic came through, hours would be extended.

Go, if it's convenient for you! And maybe even if it isn't! (I would, but I'm just on a personal mission to seek out great and new coffeeshops. it's what I do for fun.) Treat yourself. I don't imagine you will regret it!

Blue Door

by Tanya Barfield

directed by Jessica Finney

Featuring David Wiles and Eric Avery

with
scenery by Erica Zaffarano
lighting by Geoff Wold
sound by Katharine Horowitz
costumes by Lori Opal
stage management by Allana Olson

An African-American math professor struggles with his most challenging
equation. Left alone by his wife after refusing to join the Million Man
March, Lewis watches as the ghosts of his ancestors shatter the silence of
his insomnia. He is drawn into a spiral of history, a crisis of identity and
culture and an exploration of what it means to be black, then and now.

Blue Door is an exuberantly theatrical work about the black male experience in America.

Does anyone know where I could get a decent used laptop? I'm not looking to spend all that much (something under $100 would be ideal) , but I just need something that has word and will access the internet, so my expectations are not high. Older, Win 98 or whatever is fine, as long as it comes with an adapter, a cd drive, and a slot for a wireless card. I've tried ebay, tried craigslist, and now I'm about to give up...

Thanks

Hey cool lj kids!

I'm wondering if any of you know where I might be able to get a hot new vegan tat. Seems to me, there are so many vegans in the cities, there has to be a place that carries vegan inks standard without having to request them. If you know of any artists that would be willing to special order vegan ink, that'd be cool too.

For those not in the know, there are two components to tattoo ink, the ink itself that stays in your skin (which is always vegan) and the carrier, which make the ink liquid, glycerin, which is sourced from fats. More often than not, these fats are animal fats, which isn't that cool. Vegetable glycerin is used, it's just a bit more expensive, and therefore harder to find at tattooeries and the like.

And leads would be awesome, I just don't want to inject animal fat into my body. that doesn't seem cool to me. Vegetable fats though, that's like totally sexy ;)

Thanks in advance!

What is your favorite place to get a duvet cover? I might not even be using the term duvet correctly, so perhaps I am looking more for a "cover that will sufficiently cover and keep clean a down comforter". I like some of the ones at IKEA, but I've been shopping there for what seems like forever, and have probably had most of the designs that they have to offer. Bonus points for price of less than $50, and a button closure as opposed to snaps.

Sorry if I'm not supposed to be posting this on here, but...

I'm just wondering, is there anybody in the Twin Cities who knows Italian?  I recently got an email from the Italian consulate in Chicago that I need translated.  If anybody out there wouldn't mind helping me out (it's very short), I'd really appreciate it!  Let me know.

Hey everyone,

I've perused the community memories, but didn't find anything immediately helpful.

My hair is getting rather shaggy and unkempt, but I'm a bit tired of getting it cut into the same short style every time.  Unfortunately, I'm also a bit clueless with how to go about getting/maintaining a longer cut.  Do you know of any stylists/barbers around who can give a good haircut to a guy with less-than-specific instructions?  Affordability is very nice, but I have no objection to paying a bit more than I would at a Great Clips or a Cost Cutters.

I'd love to find somewhere to go after work this afternoon, but no rush...Wednesday works just as well :-)

Thanks!

ETA: I probably should have mentioned location...I live in Longfellow, but I work in downtown Minneapolis and I have a monthly bus pass, so most places within reason would work if you've got a glowing review!

Everyone's all agog over the presidential nomination races, but we here in MN are also nominating a DFL senate candidate! One of the four candidates for the DFL nomination is Al Franken, and he is going to be appearing at a little local TC coffeeshop this Friday evening for a meet & greet:

Coffee House Meet & Greet
Friday Jan. 18, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Sovereign Grounds Coffee Shop
813 E. 48th St
Minneapolis 55417

Map. This is basically on 48th and Chicago.

I admit that I am pimping this event not so much because of Al Franken, but because I love this little coffeeshop, which is the cutest thing ever and is run by a local family. It's also incredibly cheap and they make all the baked goods (which are really good!) by hand.

I would love your personal recommendations for a friendly, good-humored person at a reputable salon who will wax the forest from my legs without being too aghast by it. Also, what sort of cost should I expect? I used to pay $65 for bikini + full legs but that was in Canada, and long before the dollar slipped. So probably $55-$60 american. And as for the upcoming treatment, I just want hairless lower legs. $20-25 or so?

Self-promotion is welcome as well if you match my personality description.

I'm questing for places that serve a tasty and varied cheese plate. Bonus points for cheeses from local sources. So where do you like going to cut the cheese?

Can anyone recommend a good CSA?  I'm looking for 1/2 share or an every other week delivery.  Also would like deliver y in Linden Hills area.

I joined one last year and got two weeks of produce and then the farm shut down.  I know I am assuming some risk with a CSA but I'm really nervous about getting burned after last year.

Thanks

Has anyone here done the City of Lakes Loppet? I'm thinking of doing the REI 10K tour, and would like to get impressions of past participants. Also, any tips or hints on getting around the start would be helpful, too. Thanks!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to learn kung fu? I have a soft spot for Mantis but am willing to try anything that would be fun, spiritual, not macho, and effective. This will be my second martial art. We live in Saint Paul but we'll go to Minneapolis if there's something special there. Thanks!

The Missoula Oblongata returns for one night only to reprise their 2007 Fringe hit The Most Mysterious Day of the Year. The show will be performed at Bedlam Theater on Monday, Jan 14 at 8pm. This is a wonderfully surreal experimental theater piece and it was one of my favorite Fringe shows.

From their website:

The play takes place on Detective Agency Row?home to the gallant Busy Mapleswap (private eye) and twenty paces across the way, the villainous Haricot Ellicot (also private eye). As the play opens, the fall of Morse code is imminent. The telephone girls are long gone, and Haricot Ellicot?s side project?the community boxing ring?has spiraled out of control. As kitten is pitted against parakeet in what promises to be the match of the century, the community of Detective Agency Row is forced to answer the question: will anyone attend Busy Mapleswap?sannual kaleidoscope convention?

Tickets are only $12.

Hello friends,
It looks like I'll be getting married in your fair city (or should I say cities) and I haven't even seen it yet! It'll just be a small deal with our families, but I need your help.

I'm looking for a nice restaurant (a ~$20 entre type of deal) that can accomadate about 30 folks for dinner. It shouldn't be a quiet romantic place, as my family consists of really loud New Yorkers (his family is nice and quiet). A fun atmosphere is a plus but nothing too family friendly (my grandpa hates kids...see what I have to deal with here?).

I'm also interested in possible places to have the ceremony and a nice Rabbi who is willing to do a multi-faith service.

Pretty much any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!!

Besides the community ed programs at various school districts (which I am checking out) does anyone have suggestions for places to obtain computer education (hopefully at a reasonable cost)? I'm specifically looking to learn Microsoft Excel and  Microsoft PowerPoint . I'm at a beginner level in both.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

I don't know if anybody's interested, but I'm looking for an apartment swap later this year. I live in Brooklyn, New York and have a great two bedroom in a pre-war building. It has great detail, is fully furnished and there are closets in the bedrooms and windows in the bedrooms. In fact, there are windows in every room, including the bathroom. The view from the roof is of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler building and you can sort of see the Manhattan, Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges.

I'm literally one block from the train, two blocks from the grocery store, and there is an outdoor pool three blocks away (free and open every day of summer). Lot's of cute coffee shops and restaurants and the nearby roads are bike friendly. There is internet in the apartment but no cable TV or landline so you would have to have a cellphone.

I'm looking for a swap sometime after September for at least one month (sorry, I realize it's just the beginning of January), in an apartment or house close preferably in northeast or dinkytown. I don't have pets, but I don't mind watching small ones (i.e. a cat or birds). Let me know if you're interested!

Anyone hear anything?

I want to go to Karaoke on Saturday. I have read the entry in Memories, but I would like to narrow my search. Any help from fellow karaoke junkies would be much appreciated!

I'm looking for karaoke:

(1) That doesn't have a gazillion singers--at least not until after 10:30/11. I'd like to sing more than once (more like, at least once an hour, or so)
(2) Is in or near St. Louis Park

(also Friday and Saturday in the So. Suburbs?)

Hello everyone! I have been playing guitar for about 4 years, and was wondering where I could get further lessons. A teacher with musical teaching experience would be a plus. It would be ideal if it would be closer to the southern metro, but any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Hello resourceful Twin Citians,

Two friends are marrying one another this year and they are in the process of deciding between caterers. They're getting married at one of the parks and, as a result, must use an approved caterer.  Can anyone tell me if you have any yays or nays for any of the following?  While we had a truly amazing experience with Kane's Catering, they aren't on the list....

TIA!

I went to the Midtown Global Market my first time ever yesterday and was floored by all the authentic Mexican joints. We nibbled our way through the market, but the best place we ate at was by far, La Sirena Gorda. It's a Mexican Seafood stand, totally cheap, and the guy that owns Babalu in the Warehouse District owns it. We shared an Ahi Tuna Taco. It came with guacamole, black beans (with that white cheese sprinkled on top), yellow rice, and homemade tortilla chips. Anyways, I've been to Mexico several times and I must say this place has the most authentic Mexican I've ever tasted in the Twin Cities. I was absolutely floored at how good it was. And our taco was only something like $6.

I also heard through the grapevine that the Midtown Global Market is losing money and could possibly close, which would be a huge shame. There are some culinary gems there, people. If you've never been, go. The neighborhood isn't as bad as you might think.

Hey, I'm just helping out a friend who is trying to rent out her apartment.

Here's the link to the craigslist posting.

It's a 2BR upper unit in a duplex in NE Minneapolis. The rent is $995.00, water and waste removal are included but tenant is also responsible for electric, and heat. A one-month's rent security deposit is required as well as a credit check fee of $35.00 that will be applied towards the first month?s rent.

Thanks.

Can anyone recommend a good place in the Minneapolis/Saint Louis Park/Eagan area(s) that has access to a helium tank? I am really in the mood to be lightheaded and Judge Doom voiced looking to fill some balloons for a party. I need the access to the tank today during lunch, tonight after 6pm, or early tomorrow morning. Bonus points for lowest price!

It's official...Borders Block E is closing on Feb. 2nd

Storewide sale currently 25% off regular stock, 50% off bargain books, gift & stationary (including Burts Bees products), and select non-returnable items.

Please come buy shit so I don't have to pack it all up!

Borders Shortlist coupons will be honored, Rewards members will still get their benefits.

We cannot special order items for customers either...you can contact any of the other TC area Borders and they can handle out of stock requests for you.

I should note all sales from the Block E Borders from yesterday until Feb. 2nd are FINAL.

Related---if anyone knows of any downtown places that are hiring (pref. non-retail) I'd be very happy to know about it.

Here's the link to the Star Tribune article about the closing since I'm not allowed to comment on the why's, etc about the closing: http://www.startribune.com/business/12994476.html
