I had played various video games with Mark over the years. He likes the quick nature of Halo PvP combat and the rush of RTS games like Warcraft III and he enjoys Roman themed games. All of this made Roma the ideal game to introduce him to modern board gaming while visiting him in Los Angeles. We opted to play at a place called Good in Silver Lake, a place with an astounding selection of beer and friendly service.

The first couple of games passed within an hour. There was a lot of referencing the rule sheet to make sure Mark understood the card powers. By our third game he started putting together deeper strategies, backing up his forum placements with offensive cards. For my part I was exploring non-forum card deployments and attempting to drain his VP pool via emptying his slots and buying/stealing from him. The rounds started to get longer.

We were in our sixth match. The game had been going for around three hours now and had consumed many expensive beers by this point. Mark had a Forum,a Templum, a Mercatus, a Praetorianus, a Senator and a Velitus laid out. He also had a healthy pool of 8+ VPs. I had both Gladiators, a Scaenicus, a Tribunis Plebis and useless Basilica on my side. I was also down to 3 VPs. We went back and forth with me bouncing his Velitus back to his hand and/or stealing a VP. For his part he would play the Velitus for free using the Senator, miss his combat roll and swear. Meanwhile I was also drawing cards when possible to try to get some advantage over him by destroying the Senator and building a faster VP generator.

Around this time I saw a flash of light out of the corner of my eye. I assumed it was the reflection of the sun on a car passing by and scrutinized the play Mark just made because he had managed to kill my Scaenicus and was rolling to try to take out one of my Gladiators. There was some sudden commotion next to our table but neither of us looked up. It was then that I saw someone break out a fire extinguisher.

"Uh, Mark I think the building's on fire... maybe we should—"

"No! We finish this! One Gladiator down. Roll."

The other patrons in the restaurant were picking up their plates and glasses and heading outside by now. I saw a flash of flame flicker out from the air vent. "Whoa!" I cried as a waiter shot the extinguisher up into the vent. White mist showered all around and the waiter made his way to the other vent to repeat the process.

We were the only two left inside the building other than the wait staff who were busy cleaning up the extinguisher spray. I could smell burning freon. Mark and I saw the flames die, looked at each other and returned to our game.

I managed to stage a comeback in the next few turns by killing his Senator and Velitus with a Centurio/Legionarius combo and then buy his remaining VPs with a Mercator. I leaned back and smiled while Mark absorbed the defeat.

"Sorry about that guys," the waiter said as he switched on a floor fan. "Bad H-Vac will catch fire if it isn't fixed. You want a couple of beers on the house?"

Mark grabbed the deck and started shuffling.

"An IPA and a Delirium please," I said as I reset the VP pools. I hoped I'd get to play the Nero card this match. That would be funny.

One of my gaming buddies and I are now well on our way towards the 100 games mark with this game. It looks like a lot of gamers experience the same cycle of learning while playing Roma.

First, you have a periode where you try and fail, and work out most of the possibilities of the cards. What makes the game so interesting is exactly the abundance of different possibile combinations that can make an impact in the game.

Second, in a short periode, you get stunned by one card or another which seem to be too strong to handle, for us it was the Gladiator.

Next up is the Forum, which seems to be almost impossible to beat when your opponent starts the game with one, or even worse two! We almost gave up in this periode where it more or less became a race to collect the most Forums. At the same time this is when you really start "getting" the potential in this brilliant game. In desperation you start trying out anything to find a countermeasure. And boy, are there possibilities; Centurion, Nemo, Essedum and more.

Then the Mercator rears it's ugly head... And that has really been the crux over the last 20 games. This card is close to impossible to protect yourself from. Naturally, there are situations and special circumstances where one of us have been able to pull out a win although the opponent had the card, but it is rare. Typically, you keep the card in hand until you are able to buy all of your opponents VPs. This leads to both players going through the draw deck as fast as possible hunting for the holy grail. The game then become long and not very satisfying.

So, I'm really glad to hear that the Mercator as it is now was a relic from playtesting, and that it should be played with a buying limit. That gives the opponent a possibility for taking it out, since it is weak.

So, thanks to Stefan Feld and Queen games for putting out the most played game of the year for my part!

Great summary Remo!

If the Mercator would not have been limiited by the author "ex post" I would also think of some unbalance here; however the game as it is now is admittedly a wild creature begging to be tamed but it can be done - and it must be done because then it reveals its true multi-facet face...

Thanks Tim!

This is exactly my experience and conclusion so far as well (after 80+ games over the last couple of months).

Especially your points on Balanced play and Minimum plays rings true, and are important for possible buyers to get.

There is a learning curve in the game that has nothing to do with the dynamics of the game, but figuring out the combos and best use/counteruse of cards.
